awesome essay Read the topic and sample essay, then study the comments. Thesis Code? Click on the highlighted text for comments about academic writing conventions; click on the notes in the margin for commentary on the essay. Birth rates are falling in essay, developed countries. There is one simple reason for this - young people nowadays are just too selfish and too self-centred to have children. And this is particularly true of women. Theme Discount 2012? To what extent do you agree with this view? Support your argument with relevant readings and evidence. Countries in the developed world have seen a big shift in attitudes to population growth. Several generations ago, it was generally believed that too many babies were being born, and that societies should try to about my childhood reduce their populations. Nowadays, however, the concern is the thesis theme code 2012 reverse - that birthrates are falling too low and that urgent action is needed to encourage people to have more children.

But what are the causes of travel and tourism this trend? And how much are the attitudes and lifestyles of young people to code 2012 blame? This essay will consider a number of explanations for the so-called baby crash. My argument will be that to write hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful. The best explanation, I believe , is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young. The birth rate has fallen dramatically in many parts of the world. To take several examples, in Europe in 1960, the total fertility rate (TFR) was about theme 2012 2.6 births per female, but in 1996 it had fallen to essay about my childhood days 1.4 (Chesnais, 1998) . In many Asian countries, similar declines have been experienced. Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) . A TFR of discount 2012 below 2.0 means that a country#039;s population is not replaced, and definicion thus there is a net population decline.

This ageing of the population has the potential to create serious problems. Fewer children being born means that in the long term, a smaller proportion of the populace will be economically productive, whilst a larger proportion will be old and economically dependent - in 2012, the form of pension, health care and other social services. Most experts agree that these greying societies will not be able escape serious social and economic decline in the future (Chesnais, 1998). So what are the causes of this trend and what can be done to stop it? One common approach has been to lay the blame on young people and their supposedly self-centred values. It is argued that in about days, developed societies, we now live in a post-materialist age, where individuals do not have to be so concerned about basic material conditions to survive (McDonald, 2000a). Thus people, especially the young, have become more focussed on the values of self-realisation and the satisfaction of personal preferences, at the expense of traditional values like raising a family. A strong version of this view is put forward by Japanese sociologist, Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) . He uses the term parasite singles to refer to grown children in their 20s and 30s who have left school and are employed, but remain unmarried and continue live at home with their parents. These young people are spoilt, he says, and interested only in their own pleasure - mainly in the form of shopping. According to Yamada , it is discount code this focus on self, more than any other factor, that is responsible for Japan#039;s languishing birth rate (Ashby, 2000). In other developed countries, there is bibliography for history research paper a similar tendency for the young to remain at home enjoying a single lifestyle - and a similar tendency for older people to interpret this as selfishness (McDonald, 2000a).

But is it reasonable to attribute the baby crash to the pleasure-seeking values of the young? The problem with this view is that whenever young people are surveyed about theme their attitudes to family, not only do they say they want to thesis arbeit have children, they also express preferences for family sizes that are, on average, above the replacement level (McDonald, 2000a). Discount Code? As an example, McDonald quotes an Australian study that found that women aged 20-24 expected to have an average of 2.33 children in their lifetime. Findings like this suggest that the about days values of the young are not at all incompatible with the code 2012 idea of having a family. It seems then that, as young people progress through their twenties and thirties, they encounter obstacles along the way that prevent them from fulfilling their plans to be parents.

Some conservative thinkers believe the main obstacle is the changed role and status of women (eg. Norton, 2003). According to this view, because young women now have greater educational and write in kate career opportunities than in previous generations, they are finding the idea of family and thesis motherhood less attractive. Thus, educated middle class women are delaying marriage and childbirth or even rejecting motherhood altogether. Thesis Themen? It is claimed that women#039;s improved status - which may be a good thing in itself - has had the 2012 unfortunate consequence of threatening population stability. But there are several problems with this argument. For one, the lowest TFRs in Europe are found in Spain and Italy (around 1.2), both more traditional, male-oriented societies, which offer fewer opportunities to women. In comparison, Sweden which has been a leading country in advancing the rights of women enjoys a higher TFR (1.6 in 1996) - even though it is still below replacement. Chesnais (1998: p. 99) refers to this contrast as the feminist paradox and concludes that empowerment of women [actually] ensures against a very low birth rate (my emphasis) . Another problem with trying to thesis soziale link improved education levels for women to low birth rates is that fertility in developed countries seems to be declining across all education and class levels. In a recent survey of Australian census data, Birrell (2003) found that, whereas the non-tertiary-educated group was once very fertile, its rate of partnering is now converging towards that of tertiary educated women.

We can summarise the discussion to this point as follows: Young people today, in spite of what#039;s said about their values, still express a desire to discount code 2012 have children. However, few end up having as many as they say they would like. The improved education and career opportunities for women does not seem to my childhood days be the thesis theme discount 2012 decisive factor in reducing the number of children that a woman has. These conclusions suggest that there must be something else involved. Many writers are now pointing to thesis definicion a different factor - the economic condition of young people and their growing sense of insecurity. Peter McDonald (2000a) in his article #039;Low fertility in Australia: Evidence, causes and discount code 2012 policy responses#039; discusses some of the things that a couple will consider when they are thinking of having a child. One type of thinking is what McDonald calls Rational Choice Theory, whereby a couple make an assessment of the relative costs and benefits associated with becoming a parent. Food Essays? In traditional societies, there has usually been an economic benefit in having children because they can be a source of labour to help the family. In developed societies, however, children now constitute an economic cost, and so, it is argued, the benefits are more of a psychological kind - for theme code example, enjoying the essay and tourism status of being a parent, having baby who will be fun and will grow up to love you, having offspring who will carry on the family name etc.

The problem, McDonald suggests, is that for code 2012 many couples nowadays the economic cost can easily outweigh any perceived psychological benefits. McDonald (2000b) discusses another type of bachelor soziale decision-making - Risk Aversion Theory - which he says is code also unfavourable to how to write turabian the birth rate. Thesis Theme Discount? According to this theory, when we make important decisions in our lives life, if we perceive uncertainty in our environment, we usually err on essay on safe travel, the side of thesis discount 2012 safety in order to avert risk. Food? McDonald points to a rise in economic uncertainty which he thinks has steered a lot of young people away from life-changing decisions like marriage and parenthood: Jobs are no longer lifetime jobs. There is a strong economic cycle of booms and busts. Geographic mobility may be required for employment purposes (McDonald, 2000: p.15).

Birrell (2003) focuses on increased economic uncertainty for 2012 men. Referring to the situation in Australia, he discusses men#039;s reluctance to form families in terms of perceived costs and turabian risks: Many men are poor - in 2001, 42 per cent of men aged 25-44 earnt less than $32,000 a year. Only two-thirds of men in this age group were in full-time work. Young men considering marriage could hardly be unaware of the risks of marital breakdown or the long-term costs, especially when children are involved (Birrell, 2003: p.12). Thesis Theme Discount 2012? And Yuji Genda (2000) in Japan, responding to bachelor soziale themen Yamada#039;s analysis of parasite singles, argues that the failure of young Japanese to leave home and start families is not due to self-indulgence, but is an understandable response to increasingly difficult economic circumstances. Genda (2000) notes that it is the young who have had to bear the brunt of the theme 2012 decade long restructuring of the Japanese economy, with youth unemployment hovering around 10% and a marked reduction in secure full-time jobs for the young. Young people around the world seem to have an increasing perception of economic uncertainty and about my childhood days contemplate something their parents would have found impossible - a decline in living standards over their lifetime. According to a 1990 American survey, two thirds of respondents in the 18-29 age group thought it would be more difficult for their generation to live as comfortably as previous generations (cited in Newman, 2000: p.505). Furthermore, around 70% believed they would have difficulty purchasing a house, and around 50% were worried about their future.

Findings like these suggest that the younger generation may be reluctant to have children, not because they have more exciting things to do, but because they have doubts about their capacity to provide as parents. Thesis Theme Discount Code 2012? If we accept that economics has played a significant role in young people choosing to have fewer babies, then the key to reversing this trend is for how to turabian governments to take action to remove this sense of insecurity. A number of thesis discount code 2012 policy approaches have been suggested. Some writers have focussed on the need for better welfare provisions for essays families - like paid parental leave, family allowances, access to child care, etc (Chesnais, 1998). Others have called for more radical economic reforms that would increase job security and discount code raise the living standards of the essay about young (McDonald, 2000b). It is theme discount code 2012 hard to know what remedies are needed.

What seems clear, however, is that young people are most unlikely to reproduce simply because their elders have told them that it is selfish to do otherwise. Castigating the thesis definicion young will not have the effect of making them willing parents; instead it is likely to just make them increasingly resentful children. Ashby, J. As part of essay on safe this thinking, you should give some thought to what your position (argument) could be.

After giving some background in theme discount code, paragraph 2, the student reminds the reader what the main issue is - why birthrates have declined? Notice how in the first part of the paragraph, these ideas are discussed in a general way.

In the second part, the student focuses on on safe travel and tourism, the ideas of a single writer (Yamada) as a specific example of this view. Hint: always try to find opportunities in your work to engage with the ideas of individual writers. The previous paragraph was concerned with summarising some ideas. Notice how in this new paragraph, the student provides a critique of these ideas. (Recall the student#039;s argument in the introduction: . to hold young people responsible is neither valid nor helpful). Notice too that the student provides some supporting evidence for this critique - mainly from the work of McDonald. Hint: it is quite OK to theme discount criticise the essay my childhood days ideas of other writers - in thesis, fact many essay topics will specifically ask you to do this. But if you are going to be critical, you need to provide good reasons for your critique. Recall that the topic suggested that young people were to blame for annotated for history research paper declining birthrates - and then went on to single out women. (There are several problems with this argument).Notice that the student then goes on to explain these problems (For one. ; Another problem is that . ). Hint: the providing of about days a well-organised critique is something your lecturers will value highly in your work. Recall the second part of the theme 2012 student#039;s argument stated in the introduction: The best explanation is to be found in the condition of increased economic insecurity faced by the young. On Safe And Tourism? The student now elaborates on thesis 2012, this part of the argument. Hint: remember that the argument is the key to in kate any essay you write. In the body of your essay, you need to be sure that your argument comes through clearly. Providing evidence for the argument. The student is arguing that economic insecurity experienced by young people is the discount code main reason why the birthrate is in definicion, decline. Notice how in the rest of the essay, he seeks to support this argument with various forms of evidence. Thesis Discount? The student presents a range of evidence: several theories discussed by arbeit, McDonald some research by theme discount code, Birrell comments by Genda results of a US survey. Hint: it is important to have an argument in essay about days, your essay. But it is thesis discount 2012 equally important to essay about days provide support for what you are arguing.

Your essays will be judged mainly on your ability to do these two things. There are a number of things happening in theme discount, the conclusion. In the first sentence, the student restates his argument - if we accept that. . He then goes on to discuss what could be done to deal with the problem. In broad terms this is write in kate turabian a discussion of the implications of the students#039; argument. Notice also how the student mentions the negative implications of the blaming approach. Hint: a conclusion that only restates the code argument can be a bit uninteresting. You might also like to consider the implications of food your argument - but you should do this briefly.

Think: I have argued for this position - so what might follow on from this. You may have noticed that this essay is quite tightly structured. Its paragraph structure can be set out thus: Introduction Background to issue Explanation point 1 - summary student#039;s critique Explanation point 2 - summary student#039;s critique Student#039;s alternative explanation - Evidence 1 - Evidence 2 - Evidence 3 Conclusion. Hint: always try to map out a structure for your essay. Do this before you do too much writing. Discount 2012? You may have noticed that the essay is free of annotated bibliography research spelling, typographical and grammatical errors. Hint: always read your work very carefully before you submit it. Note in for history research paper, the references section, you need to theme discount list all the texts you have referred to (cited) in the essay - not all the security essays texts you have read, as some students mistakenly believe.

Notice that the sample essay refers to thesis 2012 a total of nine texts. This is and tourism a good number, and indicates that the theme discount student has done a fair amount of reading. Hint: try to include a reference to bachelor soziale most of the texts that you read for an essay - so that you can build up a reasonable list of references. Of course, all references have to be relevant to your argument. Notice how the student uses I in thesis discount code, his essay: The best explanation, I believe, is. And in the previous sentence, another first person pronoun is used: My argument is definicion that . Some students have the impression that they are not allowed to use these words in their written work. But in discount, fact they can often be found in academic writing. In general, the essays best place to use them is in the introduction - when you are presenting your argument. Theme Code 2012? But if you are concerned that it is not OK to use I, you can use other expressions - which avoid self-reference, but which mean much the same thing, e.g.

This essay will argue that . Remember though, that the how to write really important issue is theme discount code 2012 not the words you use to present your argument - but that your essay actually has a clear argument. Try to keep your paragraphs a reasonable length. (Most paragraphs in this essay are around 7-8 sentences long.) Citations are used to how to in kate turabian indicate the thesis theme code source of the ideas you have used in your essay. Note that there are two main citation systems: the author-date system (also known as Harvard); the footnote system (also known as Oxford). In this essay, the author-date system has been used. (Always check which system is required in each of your subjects.) Citation 2 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000) Citations can be set out in a number of ways. One method is to present some information and then provide the for history research paper citation immediately after it to indicate the source. Theme? These are known as #039;information-prominent#039; citations eg: Japan now has a birthrate of only about 1.3, and Hong Kong#039;s has fallen to below 1.0 (Ichimura and Ogawa, 2000). Other formats are considered further on.

Citation 3 Masahiro Yamada (cited in Ashby, 2000) This citation means that the for history paper student is dealing with the ideas of Yamada, but actually read about them in Ashby#039;s text. Whilst you should make an effort to discount read ideas in their original form, this is not always possible. In such cases, use the #039;cited in#039; format. When you are summarising the ideas of a writer, you need to use reporting expressions like the ones used here: He [Yamada] uses the term . According to Yamada. You use these to distance yourself from certain language. eg. when you are using an informal expression, or a term used by bachelor soziale, others that you don#039;t necessarily agree with. In this paragraph, the student wants to reject the view in the topic - that young people#039;s selfishness is to blame for the declining birthrate. Notice how he does this in a careful way, by using expressions like: Findings like this suggest that . It seems then that . Being careful about the way you express your claims is theme discount a distinctive feature of academic style. When you quote an author (like Chesnais here) you need to use quotation marks, and indicate the exact page number in the citation. Sometimes you may need to change the wording of the quote slightly so that it fits into your sentence.

If you need to add/change any words, use [ ]; if you need to delete words, use . (Whilst it is OK to change the wording of a quote, you must never change its sense.) Use italics when you want to emphasise a word. (When you do this in a quote, you need to indicate that it is your emphasis.) It#039;s OK to use dot points in an essay (or numbered points here), but use them very sparingly. Citation 4 Peter McDonald (2000a) . discusses. About Days? Notice how in some citations the author can be part of the sentence: Peter McDonald (2000a) . discusses some of the things etc. This is known as an #039;author-prominent#039; citation and is very common in academic writing. Notice the use of reporting verbs in this citation type (discusses). Use #039;inverted commas#039; for the title of an article. Use italics for the title of a book. Notice some of the other reporting expressions used in the student#039;s summary of thesis theme code Peter McDonald#039;s ideas: . what McDonald calls. Thesis? . McDonald points to . Theme Discount Code? . which he thinks. It#039;s very important to make it clear to your reader when one paragraph ends and a new one begins. In this paragraph (#9), there is some potential for confusion.

Notice how the student has used indenting to make this clear. Quotes of how to turabian more than one sentence in length should be separated from the main text. Notice how these are indented and are in a slightly smaller font. Again you should indicate the theme discount 2012 page number. You only have to provide a separate list of write turabian references when you use the author-date system. Entries should be set out in theme code 2012, alphabetical order. Security Essays? Each entry should generally be set out in the following order and format: Author family name, Initial. (date).

In addition to providing author and title of theme discount code 2012 site, you need to include: the URL for the site when you accessed the site. Although web references can be very useful, you obviously need to on safe travel exercise some caution - there is theme a lot of junk around. Since you have to write an argumentative essay, you might as well learn how to write it well, right? I’ve said it time and code 2012, time again—there’s nothing worse than staring at annotated bibliography for history research, a blank page.

Putting together an argumentative essay outline is the thesis theme discount code, perfect way to turn your blank document into a ready-to-use template. All you have to do is fill in the blanks! In this blog post, I’m going to share with you how to create an argumentative essay outline. At the end, I’ll give you a downloadable skeleton outline you can use to get started. Structure of the Argumentative Essay Outline. That’s not so bad! There’s really nothing to essay days be afraid of. Here’s how your argumentative essay outline would look if you turned it into a pretty picture: Each of these four sections requires some important elements. Thesis Discount. Let’s break those down now.

Argumentative Essay Outline Section 1: Your Intro. Your introduction is where you lay the foundation for your impenetrable argument. It’s made up of a hook, background information, and a thesis statement. 1. Hook. Your first sentence is comprised of a “hook.” Don’t know what a hook is? A hook is a sentence that grabs your reader’s attention just like a good Jackie Chan movie grabs the attention of a martial arts fan. Let’s say I’m writing an argumentative essay about why American people should start eating insects.

My hook could be, “For those interested in improving their diets and food essays, the environment, say ‘goodbye’ to eating chicken, fish, and beef and thesis theme discount, ‘hello’ to eating silk worms, crickets, and caterpillars.” If you’re having trouble coming up with a good hook, I recommend reading my blog post How to Write Good Hook Sentences. 2. Background information. The next part of your intro is dedicated to offering some detailed background information on paper, your topic. Try answering the following questions: What is the issue at theme discount code, hand? Who cares? Where is this issue prevalent? Why is on safe travel and tourism it important? For example, “Insects are abundant, nutritious, and environmentally sustainable.

Currently, people in the United States shun the idea of eating insects as part of their diets, favoring instead less nutritious and environmentally destructive food options, such as beef and thesis discount 2012, pork. The UN recently issued a statement calling for more world citizens to embrace the many benefits of eating insects.” 3. Thesis. Your thesis typically makes up the last sentence of your intro paragraph. This is where you clearly state your position on on safe travel and tourism, the topic and give a reason for your stance.

For example, “A diet of discount code 2012, insects can help fix problems related to starvation, obesity, and climate change, and therefore, United States citizens should learn to thesis rely on a variety of insects over chicken, beef, and theme discount 2012, fish as their main source of security essays, protein and nutrition.” Notice the discount 2012, word “should” in my thesis statement? Using this word makes it clear I’m taking a stance on essay, the argument. You’ll also notice that my thesis statement sets up the three claims I’m going to expand on later: a diet of insects can help fix problems related to starvation, obesity, and 2012, climate change. Let’s talk about adding those claims to our argumentative essay outline now. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 2: Developing Your Argument. Now that you have filled in the general points of your topic and outlined your stance in thesis arbeit themen the introduction, it’s time to develop your argument. In my sample outline, I show three claims, each backed by three points of thesis theme discount code 2012, evidence. Offering three claims is bibliography for history research just a suggestion; you may find that you only have two claims to thesis theme discount 2012 make, or four. The exact number of claims you choose to include doesn’t matter (unless, of course, your teacher has given you a specific requirement). What matters is that you develop your argument as thoroughly as possible.

1. What is a claim? A claim is a statement you make to support your argument. For example, “Bugs are highly nutritious and on safe travel and tourism, eating them can fix the problem of thesis theme discount code 2012, hunger and malnutrition in the United States.” Great! So I’ve made my claim. But who’s going to believe me? This is where evidence comes into play.

2. What is evidence? For each claim you make, you need to provide supporting evidence. Evidence is factual information from reliable sources. It is thesis not personal knowledge or anecdotal. For example, “Researchers at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United States state that ‘Termites are rich in protein, fatty acids, and other micronutrients. Fried or dried termites contain 32–38 percent proteins.’“

My outline shows three pieces of evidence to support each claim, but you may find that each claim doesn’t necessarily have three pieces of evidence to back it. Once again, the exact number doesn’t necessarily matter (unless your teacher has given you instructions), but you need enough evidence to make your claim believable. Once you have gathered your evidence to support your claims, it’s time to add the next important element of your argumentative essay outline: refuting your opponents’ arguments. Let’s talk about that now. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 3: Refuting Opponents’ Arguments. In this section, you state your opponents’ views and then offer a rebuttal.

For example, “Opponents of insect eating from the theme discount code 2012, Beef Council of America say that it is too difficult and time consuming to catch crickets, so it is security not easy to theme discount code gather enough food for a meal, whereas a cow is large and write in kate turabian, contains a lot of meat for many meals.” Oh diss! We know the Beef Council just wants us to keep eating McD’s hamburgers and code, skip the cricket soup. (By the way—I just made that up. The Beef Council did not say that. In your essay, make sure to thesis use real facts.) Now it’s time to set the opponents straight with a refutation that is full of hard evidence and that will bring them to their knees. For example, “According to theme 2012 researchers Cerritos and Cano-Santana, the best time to harvest crickets is to catch them in the hour just before sunrise when they are least active.

What’s more, it is easy to develop the infrastructure to farm crickets in a way that is more sustainable than cattle farming.” Booyah! The Beef Council has been served (crickets). Once you have refuted your opponents’ viewpoints, it’s time to sail to essay the finish line with your conclusion. Argumentative Essay Outline Section 4: Conclusion.

In your conclusion, you are going to accomplish two important tasks. 1. Restate the thesis discount 2012, importance of your issue. Similar to what you did in for history your introduction, you want to restate why this topic is critical. For example, “Simply by incorporating insects into their diets, U.S. citizens can improve the sustainability and thesis 2012, nutrition of the American diet.” 2. Essay My Childhood Days. Paint a picture of the world if your argument is (or is not) implemented. In the thesis theme 2012, final part of your conclusion, make your audience think about the ramifications of your argument. What would happen if people started eating insects as a staple of their diets? For example, “The world would be a better place if more people ate insects as a part of their diets. Fewer people would go hungry, more people would get the vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients they need to essay days live healthy lifestyles, and our planet would be relieved of the burden of an thesis discount code, unsustainable food system. Write My Research Paper for Me -
Thesis theme discount code

Nanovo: From The Cosy Dens of Another Time. by Benjamin Tallis. ‘Who could possibly want such things?” When Jiri Mrazek and thesis discount, Adam Karasek started Nanovo in 2009, they were prepared for food security the fact that their salvaged and restored modernist furniture would not be to everyone’s taste. However, Karasek’s mother’s reaction (quoted above) shows the scale of the challenge they faced. Given the general revival of modernist architecture and design over the last decade, this may seem surprising, but it reveals much about a regionally particular politics of memory that colours attitudes towards domestic design as much as architecture. However, Nanovo’s success also shows how dominant narratives about the past and the present are being challenged and highlights the role of material objects in doing so. Many Czechs share the – now widespread – appreciation of the thesis theme code 2012, International Style. This strand of essay my childhood days modernism carries the thesis theme code, echoes of the First Republic, the bachelor thesis themen, Czech golden age, when a flourishing of art and design and the big-thinking industrial dynamism of companies such as Bata, combined to thrust the newly-stated nation onto the world stage.

This celebrated history has long allowed Czechs to embrace the International Style as a part of thesis theme discount 2012 their own heritage, exemplified in the Tugendhat and Muller villas, but mid-century meant something very different here than the purposeful elegance of Mad Men or the soaring hope of Eero Saarinen. After ‘89, the urge to turabian disavow the communist past led to a disavowal of its aesthetics. At home this often meant junking the old in favour of the flat-packed or multinationally homogenous new and many design classics of discount 2012 this other modernism became flotsam and jetsam in the currents of on safe post-communist transition. Mrazek and Karasek travelled and theme, studied abroad, where they saw that, far from being shunned, the thesis, designs of this other time, of discount 2012 this other modernity were celebrated. Food Security Essays? These experiences drove them to question the conformism of theme code 2012 domestic consumption after communism and to how to write speculate that the objects, the material remains of that past could also have a place in the present. Inspired by thesis discount, flea-market-furnished Berlin, Mrazek and essay on safe travel and tourism, Karasek, set about rescuing the “gems” of communist-era domestic design from thrift stores and thesis theme 2012, junk shops around the Czech Republic.

Rescuing domestic objects from the definicion, garbage heap of history, resonates with bigger trends in Czech society that seek to reclaim private memories from the blanket condemnation that obscures the lived experiences of this period. This resistance to locally-dominant politics of memory is thesis theme discount interwoven with a dissatisfaction with – what might be termed – the ‘multinational style’, the about, homogenizing blandness that became characteristic of much of the 90s and 00s in ‘transition’ and which manifested itself in the limited choice of theme 2012 Western-approved or Western-owned furniture, beer or politics. Nanovo’s focus is on domestic objects and their ever-changing collection of household and industrial modernism. However, the Jitona sideboards, Tesla desklamps, Pragotron clocks, workshop lighting are complemented by other minor markers of time and place: chicken-shaped plastic eggcups, vintage paddles for boats long stuck-up other creeks, maps of the world made for security essays socialist classroom walls. These objects recall the private lives of Czechs and Slovaks in the period of ‘Normalisation’.

This closing down of the theme, public sphere, a social permafrost that followed Prague’s most famous spring, heightened the importance of creating ‘cosy dens’[1]: domestic realms of retreat, resilience and on safe, resistance which functioned as interior ‘outsides’, where children could grow up and happy times could be had, in spite of “post-totalitarian” one party rule. As Charity Scribner notes in Requiem for Communism [2] consideration of the domestic objects of these times allows for collective “memory work on a human scale”. Despite muddled media reports,[3] Mrazek is adamant that Nanovo does not seek to satiate Ostalgic desires for retro kitsch that rest on the allure of a dangerous regime now thrillingly exotic at a safe historical distance. The focus is on design quality rather than the period or conditions of their production. Thesis Discount Code? The Finnish PeeM chair – a leather upholstered armchair, which turns on an aluminium four-spoke base – has proved as popular now as it was in 70s Czechoslovakia.

Mrazek argues that: “These pieces looked good 20 years ago; and they will look good in 20 years.” Nonetheless, Nanovo’s style certainly appeals to essay about days those, like its founders, who grew up in the 70s and thesis theme code, 80s and who were “heavily shaped” by the architecture and urbanism of the time as these “styles unconsciously sunk under our skin” as Mrazek puts it. Mrazek and Karasek grew up respectively in the lower and upper parts of bibliography paper Prague’s Smichov district, where they still live, although they have now swapped places on the hill. From flea markets to the annual design supermarket, via the opening of a large warehouse space (and mid-century Aladdin’s cave) in the outlying industrial area of Vysocany and, recently, the opening of a flagship store in Prague’s Old Town, Nanovo has come in from the margins and thesis theme 2012, spawned a series of how to in kate imitators. This growing acceptance and success speaks to discount code the changing conditions of the politics of memory – and its material manifestations in annotated bibliography for history research, the Czech Republic. Nanovo’s founders are part of the generation known locally as ‘Husak’s Children’ – after the Czechoslovak leader Gustav Husak who oversaw the period of normalisation.

Coming of age only after ’89, this generation has sought continuity between their past and present; to reconcile the material environments of chidhood and adolescence with those encountered later. It is no surprise therefore that the ‘Nanovo look’ is commonplace in the new generation of bars and cafes they own, run and frequent: Cafe Kaaba’s opaxit glass-topped coffee tables, the industrial lamps in Cafe Sladkovsky, the thesis, Ton and Tatra chairs in Cafe v Lese and the plectrum-shaped formica ‘Brusel’ tables in the Malkovich bar are but a few of many possible examples. These hipster hangouts combine internationally recognisable traits with a distinctive Czechness that speaks of a resurgent self-confidence – a willingness to rescue their childhood from the totalising judgements of history and to reject the ‘post-historical’ ablandisements of transition. The Ambiente restaurant group has also got in on this act with its haute reinterpretations of classic Czech cuisine but, even more so, with its ‘Lokal’ pubs. Essay On Safe Travel? These locales pride themselves on serving only theme code, Czech products – and some of the how to write in kate, finest Pilsner in Prague – but it is in discount code, the decor and in the small touches, such as the flea-market-familiar plastic bread baskets, that Lokal really stands out. The wooden benches and wall coverings feature etched, backlit graffiti of the kind familiar from school desks Europe-wide, harking back to the schooldays of thesis designer Maxim Velcovsky (born 1976) and many others. The bathroom decoration takes things a step further with the thesis code 2012, walls (in the gents) covered from floor to ceiling in a scrapbook collage of images from the 70s and 80s: Niki Lauda’s Ferrari and Skoda sports editions; Franz Beckenbauer Michel Platini and thesis, Antonin Panenka; glamorous foreign air hostesses and local soft porn. These images are taken from period magazines – not only from Czechoslovakia and other Warsaw Pact countries, but from Western publications as well. Lokal’s fixtures, fittings and collage questions the sweeping judgements that emphasise clear-cut difference between West and East and code 2012, the isolation and essay, inferiority of the latter, by recalling the ways in which people lived and the connections between the blocs. Mrazek – a big fan of Lokal – was also quick to note the thesis discount 2012, international influence in Czech design during communism: “You can see that a magazine came from, lets say Italy, and that then there are some designs for lamps that, don’t copy but somehow work with, what the designers had seen there.” A generation of what Mrazek describes as “open-minded” Czechs are looking afresh at the aspects of their past, which, far from being something to be ashamed of are now celebrated: for annotated bibliography for history paper the skill of designers and architects in remaining conversant with and making major contributions to modernist design under testing circumstances.

Emphasising the connections of this modernism to Western outsides, rather than seeing it as product of isolated communist inferiority, has helped spur public re-appraisals of brutalist architecture as well as of discount 2012 Nanovo-style domestic design. However, the Czechoslovak modernism of the 60s, 70s and 80s also testifies to particular lived experiences – of communism and of what followed. Contemplating the worth of the design of this period invites reflection on the ways that Czechs can find their place in their increasingly interconnected post-communist world without totally disavowing their past or surrendering to the false diversity of much of the multinational present. Definicion? Charity Scribner, quoting Maurice Halbwachs, argues that: “‘Space is a reality that endures.’ Indeed, we can only recapture the past by understanding how ‘it is preserved in our physical surroundings’. Place and group mutually constitute one another.” Nanovo’s founders Mrazek and Karasek provide material ways in which this can happen and thesis discount code, spur modernist questioning of the pseudo-diversity of the postmodern present. We should seize the chance, as many Czechs are doing to consider their place in the international order and in essay days, their own cosy dens. A version of this piece originally appeared in The Modernist, ‘ Domestic’ issue in 2014 . [1] Cosy Dens is a literal translation of the Czech term ‘Pelisky’ which is also the title of a well-known, 1999 Czech film, directed by Jan Hrebejk. [2] Charity Scribner (2003), Requiem for Communism, Cambridge: MIT Press. The news that Pro-European, anti-Yanukovych protestors in thesis code 2012, Kyiv had toppled the Lenin statue at the corner of thesis Kreshchatyk and Shevchenko brought to mind a story told to discount 2012 me by the artist and activist Nikita Kadan.

It was merely days after Yanukovych’s Party of Regions along with their allies, the Communist Party of Ukraine, had secured victory in the parliamentary elections, gaining the majority that saved Yanukovych and Azarov in the Verkhovna Rada this past Tuesday. It seemed a long time since the Orange Revolution had failed; a long time since we had given up on Yushchenko; a long time since some of us realized that an oligarch, even one with a golden halo of wheatsheaf hair, could not be trusted. Days? Now, it is that November night that seems a long way away. As we wandered, frozen through Kyiv, in search of a bar for thesis theme discount 2012 a warming brandy, we walked past the Lenin statue and how to in kate, Nikita told me the story of the Black Lenin. The statue of thesis theme code 2012 VI Ulyanov that stands at the opposite end of the Kreshchatyk to the Maidan was richly rendered in red Karelian marble and Kadan told me then about the last time it had been attacked, when acid had been thrown onto thesis definicion, it, disfiguring the face and hands. The Communist Party of Ukraine, whose posters, tents and videos had been all over Kyiv that summer, paid for the restoration and thesis 2012, arranged for a protective vigil to be kept close by. Typically, however, not all went to plan. The marble ordered to put right the damage was of a significantly darker shade than the original. About My Childhood? Given that the damage had been to the face and theme discount 2012, hands, the botched restoration had the effect of changing the statues ‘skin’ colour, giving birth to a historical miracle – to the legend of ‘The Black Lenin’. Since then I have often thought about the Black Lenin. At the essay on safe travel, time it seemed to somehow symbolize what I felt about Ukraine, about the work of Nikita and the REP, of Maksym Butkevych and thesis theme code, Vasyl Cherepanyn, about the conversations with Denis, Mariya and for history, Julia and more recently with the Ukrainian students in Odessa, Lviv and Prague.

It summed up the thesis discount code 2012, incompetence of those they were fighting against, which was manifest in their newly intersectional statue. It seemed in how to, its own, amusingly surreal way to invert the old Viennese saw: “the situation is serious, but not hopeless” said Black Lenin. The energy, decency and thesis code 2012, courage in thesis arbeit, adversity of those who I have known in discount code, Ukraine has come shining through to a wider audience in the last week. This is a second chance. A chance to put right what happened when the thesis definicion, future turned out to be orange, but not bright. Apart from my friends there, my love of the diverse history, culture, food (yes, even salo) and drink I have found there, my engagement with Ukraine has been almost entirely through the prism of the EU. In my professional work and in theme code 2012, my research or in relation to thinking through the direction that the country could take, for better and for essay travel and tourism worse; in reflecting long and thesis 2012, hard on the perils of bachelor arbeit ‘transition’ and of stagnation; in weighing up the theme 2012, merits of association and isolation, of subjugation and about, sustenance. And it was the EU that triggered this wave of protests, finding that, almost despite itself, it was popular; that in official rejection it was still desirable as a counterpoint to Putinism and to the self-interested elites who have dominated Ukraine’s two decades of independence.

That evening, last November in thesis discount 2012, Kyiv, Nikita who was recovering from a cold, was more subdued than usual, but had been a perfect host as he guided some friends and food security, I through the exhibition at the Pinchuk Centre. He was featured twice in the show, which showcased the shortlist for discount code 2012 the ‘Future Generation Prize’, once for a solo work ‘The Small House of Giants’ and security essays, once as part of the REP Group who were nominated for their work ‘Evro-remont’ – ‘Euro-Renovation’. Both stand as suitable prisms through which to reflect on the rubble of communist icons. Cloaked as ever in a disarming simplicity and precise control of discount code 2012 material, Nikita’s ‘Small House of Giants’ comprised a classic, rusting iron-sided workers shelter, spliced with a clean, all too familiar, yet still unknowable neo-modernist facade of the type that a museum from the Soviet 70’s might take. This juxtaposition of depth and surface, of rich texture and essay about, subtle sheen are united through the myth of the heroic worker. Yet they point to the lives that were lived in-spite, as well as that which couldn’t be just … forgotten overnight.

Kadan has long tried to mourn the loss of the Soviet art institution, replaced by the ‘prosthetic limbs’ of gallery’s like Pinchuk’s. This mourning drifted to melancholia because of the void that followed what was lost; because of the code 2012, failure of ‘transition’ in Ukraine; because of the failure to replace and essay about my childhood, renew; because of discount Ukraine’s Euro-Renovation. The REP’s piece in the exhibition consisted of a series of gypsum walls, each decorated in a hastily adopted and essay, discarded style from sometime in the last twenty years, with matching carpet or lino. Evro-remont should be familiar to anyone who has tried to rent a flat in the former Soviet Union. Thesis? The cheaply rendered, hollow imitations of styles that might, briefly, look the bibliography for history research, part but won’t go the thesis theme discount, distance – “the kind of walls that you could put your elbow through in a good conversation” was how Nikita once described it to me. This prioritization of in kate turabian surface over substance has come to stand as a metaphor for theme discount code Ukraine’s ‘transition’ – superficial imitations of elsewhere’s new cover the old core which rots underneath. “Eurorenovation is a style for people who are now stealing what they see and plan to run away in a very short time. From interior design from these super kitschy interiors of 90s it turned into everything.” Now, Black Lenin is gone, the first to go in essay travel and tourism, the protestors hastily-cobbled decapitation strategy. All the interpretations of anti-Russian-ness, all the overly simplified ‘finally, the victory over communism is complete’ rhetoric that will undoubtedly follow this highly symbolic moment, will miss the point. This was the tearing away of theme code a euro-renovation, hastily authored by the rotten post-communist communist party.

Rejecting Putinism is not to thesis definicion reject Russia – many Russians would like to do the same. Similarly, embracing the EU need not be only an embrace of imbalanced neoliberalism, as many in thesis theme 2012, current EU states would agree. Ukrainians have shown the EU a way back to its better sides and given it a chance to resurrect and re-boot its Eastern Partnership. It should grasp it with both hands. As well as looking to the future, a proper reckoning with what was lost in on safe travel and tourism, the past is needed if a more solid foundation for progressive politics is to discount be built in Ukraine. This means tearing through the false overlayings, not glossing over them. If such a foundation can be built, then Ukraine can be build a better future for itself and become a bridge between the EU and Russia, not a gypsum buffer zone for essay on safe either. Ukrainians are fed up with Euro-renovations, this time they want Europe. Indecent Exposure or: The Brussels Dream – The Czechoslovak Expo ’58 Pavillion.

A tourist strolling down the right bank of the Vltava, contentedly absorbing the gothic and baroque splendour of Mala Strana and the Hradcany, might, a little further down the river, be forgiven for thesis theme discount 2012 thinking ‘Where the hell did that come from?’ Downstream of the how to turabian, decorative Hanavsky Pavilon, something that looks like it could be a modernist hermitage nestles in the trees at the Northern end of the Letna park, its minimal chic obtrusive among the thesis discount code 2012, expressive edifices of bachelor soziale arbeit downtown Prague. The arcing glass and shining steel of the kidney-shaped, elevated gallery grab the viewer’s attention from the riverside, with the theme discount code, subtle grace of the glazed pedestal only becoming apparent upon bibliography for history research, closer inspection. In answer to the tourist’s question, this light triumph came from Brussels, although, despite the flags fluttering in front of it, this building has nothing to theme discount code do with the EU. It dates from a time before the Belgian capital became synonymous with the essay, administrative HQ of the European political project, when Brussels hosted the World’s Fair: Expo ’58. This cold-war Expo was a highly politically charged event, a symbolic showcase for the superpowers, keen to trumpet their technical prowess and trump the thesis theme 2012, progress of those on the ‘other side’ of what had yet to become a wall. The ’58 Expo was also the first major international exhibition to be held since the themen, end of thesis theme discount World War 2 and, despite being planned in the dark days of the 1950s, it was a modernist materialisation of definicion hope, giving snatched glimpses of better futures. Although held less than two years after the both the Suez crisis and the crushing of the Budapest uprising, the World’s Fair came in during a brief thaw in open hostilities, the lull before the storm of the proxy war in thesis, Congo and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Briefly it seemed that the cold war could be won by science and culture, by those who could not only divide heaven, but who could also harness technological progress to deliver better living. This was the time of both Sputnik and Saarinen, of Laika and essay travel and tourism, the Lever Building; a time when Mad Men set about bringing the code 2012, gains of Mutually Assured Destruction and the space race into mid-century living rooms. In the soviet bloc, Khrushchev’s 20 th Congress denunciation had opened a narrow window of opportunity for architects and designers, as they were called upon to provide visual and material distance from the stodgy confections with which Boris Iofan and others had tried to about sugar-coat tyranny. In Czechoslovakia, many of the golden generation of interwar architecture found under the new regime that they flew too close to the sun and so this rare possibility to thesis theme discount reconnect to the international style was an alluring one. With the accent firmly on the modern, visitors to the Expo were invited to thesis definicion spend ‘One Day in discount 2012, Czechoslovakia,’ in an exposition that cracked the western-manufactured facade of communist-era culture being uniformly dull and grey. The light and voluminous spaces of Frantisek Cubr, Josef Hruby and Zdenek Pokorny’s pavilion set the scene for the most striking avant-garde theatre of the Expo. Josef Svoboda’s Polyekran (multiscreen) and Laterna Magika (magic lantern) combined projection and performance to stunning effect and stood proudly alongside the Corbusier –inspired Poeme Electronique as highlights of the festival. Function was not forgotten amidst these effervescent forms, with the pavilion’s elegant lines providing the backdrop to the best of annotated paper contemporary Czechoslovak public and interior design, such as the classic T3 tram seat (heater included for those cold Prague winters) and the Hedgehog tea set. While the political focus was on the potential standoff between the neighbouring American and thesis theme discount, Soviet showgrounds, it was the Czechs and Slovaks who took home the prize for the best pavilion. But that wasn’t all they took home, as the beautiful, curving structure that now sits in bachelor thesis soziale, the Letna orchards, was the pavilion restaurant, where millions of visitors made sure that their one day in Czechoslovakia included a pint of the original and best Pilsner. The Saaz-laden suds of Bohemia’s best-known export undoubtedly helped things go with a swing, but it was in successfully marrying such traditional craft with cutting edge technological achitecture, that the comfort with which interwar Czechoslovakia had ascended to the world’s cultural top-table.

Unlike the American pavilion which rejected the “anonymity, uniformity and all the things that go to make up modernism[1]” or the confused Soviet pavilion which encased a thoroughly retrograde exhibition in thesis 2012, a steel and glass shell, Czechoslovakia showed how modern architecture could both spur new socio-cultural possibilities and accommodate more traditional pursuits. At the end of the Expo, the restaurant was transported back to Prague and fulfilled this function throughout the communist era, including the thesis definicion, repressive period of normalisation, where it must have been a mirage-like reminder, a sleek, shimmering and theme discount 2012, somewhat unreal reminder of what Czechs came to know as the Bruselsky Sen (Brussels dream). In 1991 a fire destroyed the interior and food essays, like so many buildings realised under the socialist regime, it was not properly valued in the heady tumult of what followed. Today, although it is well signposted in the park, visitors cannot enter the restaurant building, as it is now the offices of an advertising company. The company found itself embroiled in controversy in 2008 when it ran the discount code 2012, Prague Mayor’s unrealistic vanity campaign to bring the Olympics to Prague under the slogan ‘We are all on thesis definicion the National Team.’ This was parodied on the ‘Art Wall’ under the Expo restaurant by code 2012, artivists Guma Guar who used the thesis definicion, same artwork and slogan, but instead of lauding faux-noble equestrians perched ludicrously atop mountains, they applied it to well known Czech criminals. Is it too much to hope that the advertising agency would seek to show that they too are part of the national team and return this beautiful building to thesis code 2012 public use? In doing so, they would gain their greatest PR success and provide a welcome reminder of a time where modernist substance triumphed over superpower spin.

The text for this piece originally appeared in The Modernist – Issue 6: ‘Cuppa’ in December 2012. [1] ‘Citizens and how to in kate, Architects’, Architectural Forum, 110: January 1959. The Continuation of Warsaw by Other Means. Appropriately sited on the corner of Aleja Jerozolimskie (Jerusalem Avenue) and discount code 2012, Nowy Swiat (New World St), a red-hued mosaic celebrates the heroic resistance of the doomed 1944 Warsaw Rising, while its accompanying inscription offers a post-war rallying cry of unity “Caly Narod Buduje Swoja Stolica” (The Whole Nation Builds Our Capital). The familiar narrative of a shattered nation pulling together to rebuild in essay about, the aftermath of Second World War destruction is particularly poignant in Poland, where one in thesis 2012, five people were killed, and about, especially visible in Warsaw, where nearly ninety percent of the city’s buildings were destroyed.

However, although the capital did rise, phoenix-like, from the rubble in the spirit of the discount code, inscription, this is a deceptively simple cipher through which to read Warsaw’s urban form. Thesis Definicion? The mosaic betrays the fault-lines which underlie the ‘miracle on the Vistula’ and which continue to cleave its urban canvas. It is too often imagined that communist-era urbanism must equate to grey uniformity, but anyone expecting Warszawa to offer monochrome monotony will be disappointed: this has always been a more diverse and thesis theme 2012, upbeat place than Bowie’s Low lament might suggest. The particularity of Poland’s war experience and its aftermath, the periodic expansion and contraction of the meshes of thesis definicion communist power, internecine arguments over the past and the future and relations with the outside have all left their mark on 2012 Warsaw’s cityscape. Resentment towards the Red Army, which watched from across the Vistula as Warsaw was ripped apart, gave the post-‘Liberation’ communist regime a precarious hold on food public affections. Rapid rebuilding was one way to cement the Party’s grip on power, inspiring Stakhanovite efforts from thesis theme 2012 workers dreaming of providing “a home for essay travel and tourism everyone in Poland,” as Mateusz Birkut, the still-naive hero of Andrzej Wajda’s film Man of Marble movingly relays. Discount 2012? The whole nation also (re)built the write in kate turabian, capital in another way – bricks salvaged from the rubble of other Polish cities were sent to warsaw in discount 2012, order to accelerate the reconstruction of the food security, ‘old’ town.[1] Histories of theme discount 2012 wounded pride and the prominent position of the Catholic church ensured that Warsaw’s old town rose from the about my childhood days, ruins in record time. Even today however, the old-town churches don’t quite smell old enough.

Amidst milling tourists they are strangely mustless and anachronistic affectual voids. The rebuilt ‘old’ reveals little about competing postwar visions of the thesis discount code 2012, ‘new’ apparent elsewhere in the city. As Architectural Historian Iwona Kurz notes, this was explicitly recognised at the time ” In the good, old film Adventure at Mariensztat, (directed by Leonard Buczkowski, 1954) a leading female character dressed up in about my childhood days, a folk costume, who has freshly arrived from a small village is theme discount sightseeing in Warsaw and she is annotated research bored to death with the sight of the theme discount 2012, reconstructed old town and Krakowskie Przemiesce. About Days? She prefers to go to a construction site which is bustling with activity.”[2] The concurrent construction of the ‘Smyk’ department store and the Marszalkowska residential district showcased the competition between Modernist and Socialist-Realist styles that betrayed wider struggles. Smyk’s six elegantly glazed floors, with beveled, floating corners were unlike anything that had been built in Poland when it was unveiled in 1951. Theme 2012? Amidst widespread condemnation from party hacks and thesis definicion, their useful architectural idiots, it is a wonder that the Central Department Store was actually built. In Architektura , Jan Minorski wrote “This is an architecture devoid of any educational capacity [which] … just like the thesis theme discount, non-ideological architectural decadence of thesis Loos’ and Corbusier’s Art Nouveau [shows] the ideology of ruling classes when their days are numbered.”[3] ‘The People’ however seemed to disagree, with 80,000 of thesis discount them visiting the store in its first three days of opening. Meanwhile, only a few blocks away, between Plac Konstytucji and Plac Zbawiciela, a capital of capitals was rising.

The thickset bombast of the Marszalkowska district would not look out of place in Kyiv or Moscow; hulking, sandy-coloured edifice complexes, decorated with classical colonnades and scant reliefs of workers, soldiers and peasants. This is the imagined community of the ‘whole nation’ that built the capitals atop the classical columns and which lend the for history, area all the elegance of a borrowed suit. A similar conflict plays out on Defilad Square, dominated by the massive Palace of Culture and Science (1955), – a ‘gift’ to people’s Poland from Josef Stalin. This Iofan-style wedding cake (locally nicknamed the ‘elephant in thesis discount 2012, lingerie’), cuts an impressive and threatening figure, but softens as it is reflected in the windows of the Wars, Sawa and Junior shopping centres. These sleek ripostes to thesis monumental folly were conceived in 1956 for “a Warsaw of the future, full of cars, helicopters, scooters, [of] quick life .”[4] Ironically however, delays meant that the shopping centres were only completed in 1970, as was the nearby Emilia furniture store, with its beautifully corrugated roof – an abstract wave topping out elegant linearity. Opening in the same year as the state massacre of protesting workers that precipitated the fall of Gomulka regime, these buildings seemingly presaged the relative openness of the Gierek period, with Western money and technology helping shape the discount code 2012, beige banality of the Hotel Forum as well as the dramatic, swooping curves of the Central Station. Even as it gloried in its new constructions, increased foreign contacts emboldened resistance to the regime, provoking a new wave of crackdowns in the early 80s. The solidarity of workers, church and intellectuals in thesis, the face of martial law cracked the communist facade and the process of ‘transition’ opened the floodgates for Western capital to shape Poland’s capital, threatening to drown Warsaw’s modernist babies as it flushed out the socialist bathwater.

The Palace’s skyline dominanace is now challenged by theme 2012, a crop of identikit office towers that signal a certain kind of belonging in the world of thesis global flows and which blend into undulating CADishness at ground level. Everything is neon-sponsored, even the thesis theme 2012, former party headquarters. Hipsters congregating in in kate turabian, the colonnade bars of Marszalkowska render the thesis theme 2012, columns more ironic than ionic, as yesterday’s worker-heroes look on essay my childhood uncomfortably between the adverts, while in Solec and Powisle, modernist buildings provide the backdrop for thesis theme 2012 cool bars with endearingly warm welcomes. Yet this apparently easy coexistence belies the continued conflicts that will shape Warsaw’s future. In the shadow of the bland new skyscrapers, low-rise Emilia stands out, yet faces an annotated bibliography research paper uncertain future as developers wanting to destroy it compete with curators who have set about revivifying the space. Staging the exhibition ‘Warsaw under Construction’ (2012) in Emilia provided a focal point for resistance to the erasure of Warsaw’s socialist era modernism and has seen artists, activists and academics joining forces in the next battle for Warsaw: the thesis theme discount 2012, battle for more nuanced memories of both the communist period and its modernist architecture. [1] I am grateful to Stuart Shields for reminding of bachelor thesis soziale arbeit this! [2] [4] As quoted in Jerzy S. Majewski’s (2010) ‘Book of Walks: Landmarks of People’s Poland in Warsaw” which has been inspirational and invaluable for this piece. [3] Architektura ( 1956), quoted in Majewski (2010). Czech Brutalist Architecture The Politics of Material Memory in Postcommunism. Those in the aesthetic know have long recognized that there is much more to Prague than the dreamlike castle rising above the thesis theme 2012, Baroque and Rococo confections that jostle for tourists’ attention in the picturesque old town. Thesis Soziale Arbeit? Interwar Czechoslovakia gained a well-earned reputation for its modernist milieu, from which sprang the painting of Frantisek Kupka, the theme, poetry of Vitezslav Nezval and the design classics such as the streamlined teardrop tourer, the Tatra T77. Architects working in Masaryk’s Republic also ensured that Modernist light flooded the bourgeois residences of the famous Villas Mueller (Adolf Loos) and Tugendhat (Mies van der Rohe). In contrast to the folksy, myth-making and introspective imaginary of the ‘National Revival’, the nascent bi-national consciousness that emerged from the decline of decadent Kakania and thesis definicion, the carnage of the First World War openly embraced the International Style. Czech architects and their patrons absorbed lessons learnt abroad and let their projects talk the language of CIAM[1], but with a proudly Czech accent. Of many possible examples, Oldrich Tyl and Josef Fuch’s Functionalist Trade-Fair Palace in Holesovice and theme code 2012, Josef Havlicek and Karel Honzik’s Corbusian Pension Institute in bachelor thesis arbeit, Zizkov display a familiarity and thesis theme discount 2012, comfort with the principles and practice of Modernist architecture that fuelled the urban utopianism of Tomas Bata’s “shiny phenomenon” in Zlin and how to turabian, reflected the confidence of a Republic, recognized as such for thesis code 2012 the first time, beginning to feel like it belonged in the world.

The thoroughly modern flourishing of this sense of collective self was tragically cut short by the British and French betrayal at Munich. Chamberlain’s cruel condemnation of Czechoslovakia as ‘a faraway country of which we know little’, an expendable pawn in the cynical play of food security essays great-power politics, opened the door for Nazi annexation and occupation, ‘liberation’ by the Red Army and the subsequent slide into authoritarian communism. Thesis? That short, twenty-year period, remembered elsewhere as a time of crisis[2], was burned into the Czechoslovak collective memory as a time of unparalleled freedom and creativity, hope and possibility. This was a time when the swirling forces of modernist creativity, such as those of Karel Teige’s Devetsil ensured that while this medium-sized, Central European country grew to travel become world’s 6 th largest exporting economy, it was feted not only for its wares, but the way it wore them. The memory of theme this period has become crucial to historicized understandings of what followed as well as ideas of how to be, become and belong in the present, which has been both reflected and essay about days, reinforced in thesis theme discount, the material memoryscape. The clipping of the First Republic’s youthful wings is often seen as the end of the Czech modernist line, leaving behind an food architectural high-water mark as a reminder of what could have been, of a time when concrete could be the stuff of dreams, rather than the material manifestation of a closing curtain-wall.

The monuments to that golden youth are now regular highlights on tourist schedules, highly recommended in guidebooks and often featured in design magazines. Significantly, they are promoted and thesis discount code, maintained by city and state authorities, sites of officially sanctioned mourning, melancholia and nostalgia. However, while such acclaim is essay travel richly deserved, the politics of material memory are never far from postcommunist surfaces. The focus on the First Republic has meant that many of discount 2012 Prague’s later modernist gems have often been ignored, seemingly hidden in plain sight. What Prague is For. Whereas Berlin is lauded for its TV Tower and thesis, Cafe Moskau and the former Soviet Union has seen its Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed to widespread acclaim by Frederic Chaubin, Czech Brutalism has remained largely uncelebrated, mired in the brutal circumstances of its making. It is notable that in a feature article on another recent book in this emerging genre[3], ‘Socialist Modern’ buildings in Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia are mentioned, while the Czech Republic is conspicuous by its absence. The Ministry of Transportation in Tblisi, The Slovak National Library in Bratislava, the Riga TV Tower and everything from the post-office to the university in Skopje all warrant attention but, somehow, in the international imagination, this is not what Prague is for . This impression has often also been cultivated by previously dominant politics of public memory, with Prague’s brutalist buildings seen as sad anomalies amidst the ancien splendour – inconvenient material truths that have nonetheless served a useful purpose by prodding at the guilty conscience of visiting tourists and statesmen, obscuring their uses and material qualities by casting them into the shadow of thesis theme discount code 2012 totalitarianism. It is important to food security essays understand the causes of thesis theme this willed amnesia, which in annotated bibliography for history paper, the time after communism, curated a particularly powerful impression of the recent past and has had significant implications for how life can be lived in the present. The confluence of thesis theme international and local understandings of the history of the short 20 th Century and especially its second-half, has created a dominant narrative of post-communist collective memory.

This view sees 1989 as the inevitable victory of about days a superior western model that ended a period defined exclusively by oppression and suffering, thus condemning the lived experience of millions of people to the garbage heap of history and constructing them in the present as victims and theme discount code 2012, damaged goods. In part, this has been tactical, helping to forge an understanding of a Czechs as ‘Central Europeans’ and essay, thus deserving of a ‘return to Europe’, to the exclusion of those further East, condemned as oriental others, as non-EUropeans. Milan Kundera’s famous essay ‘The Kidnapped West’[4] is a prominent example of such an approach, asserting Central European belonging in thesis theme code 2012, a Western idea of Europe and grounding its legitimacy in the interwar period. Central Europe becomes the West’s jilted lover, banished to how to turabian the Russian East, diverted from it’s ‘true’ path and theme, facing a kidnapped present and a hijacked future. Ironically, although Kundera explicitly rejects Marx and Hegel’s version of food History, he effectively espouses a Fukuyamian historicism avant le letter, albeit one that limits the teleology of a Western destiny of ‘Liberal-Market-Democracy’ to Western and Central Europeans and Americans . The importance of this narrative to dominant understandings of postcommunism cannot be overstated. Playing on the curtailed experience of democracy and linking this to the cultural flourishing of the First Republic, helped Vaclav Havel and Lech Walesa (and others) ensure that the so-called ‘Return to discount code Europe’ was institutionally concretised in how to in kate, accession to thesis discount the European Union, although this very much on about my childhood days the EU’s terms[5]. The creation of the link between the First Republic and contemporary belonging helps to erase nuanced understandings of the communist period. To be clear, this was indeed a time of tremendous suffering, oppressive politics and the callous crushing of theme discount code 2012 a shocking amount of human potential, but was that the whole story? As Vaclav Havel famously noted, there were many forms of resistance and resilience in the face of terrible circumstances, with those who were supposedly powerless, actually enacting their power on the everyday stage. It is therefore worth questioning whether this this was a ‘postcultural’ period, as Kundera claimed, or whether this assertion is as ideologically freighted as the communism (and Russianness) he set out to oppose. The Manichean view of the on safe travel and tourism, interwar period as good, the thesis theme discount code 2012, time until ’89 as bad and what followed as a return to the good life has had several important effects and thesis, affects.

Following Kundera, this sees postcommunist ‘transition’ as a journey from theme discount point to point, from the “stolen European and capitalist past” to the predetermined ?progressive? trajectory of the West[6]. Essays? However, once back on the same path, Central Europeans were seen to be behind and backward, frequently labeled either as ‘success stories’ or ‘laggards’[7] in imitating the always-already advanced West which they were benchmarked against, leading Juergen Habermas to denigrate the discount code 2012, events of thesis 1989 as “catching up revolutions.” Such a view fits with the pedagogical historicism in which the victims of communism became the thesis theme discount code 2012, ‘pupils’ of essay on safe travel and tourism heroic European and American ‘tutors’[8]. This is also reflected in the patronizing Pentecostalism that styled these revolutions as a re-birth and that talks of thesis theme discount code ‘young democracies’ and the ‘children of 89’[9]. Hard Times in Soft Cities. Importantly for this discussion of the social meaning of architecture and its role in material memory, characterizations of the annotated research, communist period as one of merely kidnap and theft ignore the complexity of lived experiences of the time leaving victim testimonies as the main mode of thesis theme discount available and acceptable public speech regarding that time. Labelling art, architecture and essays, literature of the time as ‘postcultural’ is a delegitimizing move that seeks to reify other types of culture and which supports unfairly totalizing accounts of communist experiences, a treatment all too common where communist-era cultural production is code concerned. Soziale Arbeit? However, architecture has a particular place in the cultural politics of theme code memory, as unlike visual art or literature, engagement with it is not always a choice. We all experience the material environments we live in and the annotated for history research paper, buildings in which we live and work may not always be of our choosing. Noting Jonathan Raban’s account of the ‘Soft City’ – that makes us as we make it – recognizes the importance of the imposition or contestation of material meaning and the different ways we experience architectural and urban affect.

Czech Brutalist buildings were mainly built after the crushing of the 1968 Prague Spring and have all too often become seen as the discount code, distinctly inhuman face of socialist ‘Normalisation’. These structures have thus been equated with unwelcome outside interference at a time when the only available international style was seen as a material manifestation of imprisonment, rather than the interwar proof of progressive, dynamic cosmopolitanism. Considering the very different reaction that Brutalist buildings have often inspired in the reunified Germany, it is important to note the thesis, significance of different understandings of the communist period there, as well as the impact of a very different (inter)war past. Thesis Discount? This may have contributed to a continued embrace of contemporary modernism throughout the annotated bibliography paper, post-war period, with the clear connection (and open competition) between building in theme, the East and the West, reaffirming national connection by highlighting the falseness of enforced division. In Germany, as in many other places, Brutalism was understood as an architecture from within rather than one imposed from without, albeit with differing variations and connotations in the two halves of the my childhood, divided nation. This foregrounds the social meaning-making that plays an essential, if often under-acknowledged role in aesthetic judgement. Thus, the marquee buildings of the Czechoslovak Normalisation period are often seen as all too closely entwined with authoritarian politics of the period, with their aesthetic, material and functional qualities and the complexity of thesis theme code 2012 their social meaning is too often ignored in this totalizing gaze. The communist period is often seen in the popular, Western imagination as ‘grey’ or ‘drab’, with ‘the people’ of the time eking out food essays a meagre existence in a concrete-clad, shadowy half-light that is all too easily equated with run-down, large-scale housing projects.

These descriptions, as well as the slights on key socialist-era buildings, continue to reverberate in the concrete estates – built then, but still lived-in now – many of thesis theme code 2012 which were realized in a brutalist vernacular: from the low rise ‘Solidarita’ in Strasnice and Karlin’s sleek ‘Invalidovna’, to the fleets of panel-buildings in Dablice and thesis soziale arbeit, Jizni Mesto, they have been all too easily dismissed as mere communist blocks that signal second class-life in theme discount code 2012, what was the second world. After ’89 these visions of how the bachelor soziale arbeit themen, future used to look no longer looked the part, as post-communist countries tried to shed their socialist skin and tried to emulate the theme 2012, West. This helped to contribute to the postcommunist identity crisis and the vacuum of political subjectivity created by hurried passing of these winds of annotated for history paper change. Damning the buildings of that time has also helped to cast people who live in them today as poor relations, willfully forgetting that these were, and continue to be, the places where people grew up, loved, laughed and even enjoyed moments in ignorance or defiance of the party regime. These were the thesis theme discount 2012, walls that sheltered growing families, harboured thought contemplation, witnessed the realization of small-scale creative activities and within which, people made their cosy dens. Brutalism beyond Brutality. More recently however, as the post-historical utopianism of the neoliberalising global order has been buffeted by an economic crisis so prolongued that it has become the norm and security essays, as the realities of living by thesis discount 2012, rules largely made elsewhere become clearer, it has been possible to detect mnemonic counter-currents in the Prague cityscape and beyond.

Aesthetically and functionally, the designs of Karel Prager, Vladimir and Vera Machonin and others at essay on safe travel the forefront of Czech brutalism, have stood the test of thesis 2012 time and how to turabian, are starting to receive the local and international acclaim that they deserve. Much like the myth of the Czech ‘return to Europe’ post-89, Prague did not need to “return to the international architecture scene[10]” after the cold war, it had always been there. The re-appraisal of these previously neglected architectural jewels, which increasingly stand out amidst the banality of contemporary commercial construction is part of a wider contestation of the totalizing memory of the communist period and a new willingness to accept that not everything produced in this time was necessarily bad[11]. This points to the need to re-engage a past all too quickly jettisoned in the haste of thesis transition, not to pardon or rehabilitate the communist regime, but to how to in kate recognize the nuance and complexity of the lived experiences of that period, of the significant grey areas that people were required to operate in and the not so grey experiences they may have had in and around the buildings of the time. Reconsidering the architectures of that time and their place in contemporary urban life is a significant step in thesis code 2012, reclaiming the multiple singularities of the past and thus restoring the possibility of subjective authenticity, that sense of having been both then and now and being able to speak as fully as one can of both times and indeed to rescue the beautiful babies that were thrown out with the surfeit of bad bathwater.

The former Czechoslovak Federal Assembly building (Prager, 1972) at the top of Wenceslas Square, which served as the post-89 headquarters Radio Free Europe has been fully refurbished to mark its transformation into ‘The New Building’ of the Czech National Museum. This is the building that is often seen under construction in the background of photos showing the how to write, Russian tanks that came to crush the Prague Spring and as a building explicitly intended for the authorities attained massive symbolic significance. That this architectural wonder was effectively given away to theme a foreign organization in the wake of the velvet revolution is also indicative of the politics of the time, as its gleaming resurgence at the heart of officially-sanctioned national memory. Another Prager building, the Nova Scena (1983) of the National Theatre, famous as the bachelor thesis soziale, ‘Magic Lantern’ where roundtable talks were held during the seizure of power from the communist regime has gone from being derided as looking like “frozen piss”[12] to being lauded as a must-see site in thesis theme discount, the latest Prague guide from international tastemakers Wallpaper* magazine. Similarly, the Kotva[13] department store is a reassuringly solid presence opposite the pink creme chantille of the recent and food, hideously Disney-like Palladium shopping centre. Thesis Theme Discount Code 2012? Hotels such as the essay on safe, Intercontinental[14], and President[15] downtown and the Praha[16] and Pyramida[17] further out have long catered for tourists and conference-goers, while commercial buildings such as the Smichov Komercni Banka[18] and the Cube[19] office complex showing the range of brutal beauty in Prague. Many of these buildings are archetypal brutalist designs, showcasing that the use of theme exposed materials arranged in playful or elegantly repetitive forms that is juxtaposed with the solidity and weight of the materials themselves. Definicion? This play of lightness and weight, elegance and solidity is often lost in the brutalist nomenclature which was coined for its use of Beton brut , rather than anything more sinister. The sweeping curves and egalitarian distribution of balcony space at the Hotel Praha and the elevated and seemingly floating, curtain-walled body of the thesis theme discount code 2012, former Federal Assembly speak of food a technical mastery of contemporaneous international building styles. This fluency in discount 2012, brutalist-modern visual and material language lead to innovative experimentation and a panache of execution to match the architects of the First Republic and which goes quite against annotated for history, the received wisdom on communist-era creativity. Place-making: Palimpsest and Performativity.

The changing fortunes of discount 2012 these high-profile buildings draws can be seen in both the functions that they serve and the uses that are made of thesis them, as well as on the reputation that they have. These linked aspects are highly significant for the understandings that we have of our (urban) environments and discount code 2012, relate to the manifestation of similar currents elsewhere. The first represents a performative making of and tourism meaning that can contest confirm or create the function of a space. Thesis 2012? This leads to excavatory, sedimentary or palimpsestuous place-making, reflects the direct interaction of people with the built environment. In Berlin, the days, transformation of the 3 rd Reich Air Ministry building into the contemporary Federal Ministry of Finance and the re-invention of the Olympic stadium from shameful Nazi hangover to centerpiece of a new Germany, once again accepted as having a waveable flag are only two examples of such processes. There are also many examples of this in Prague, from the re-branding of Pankrac high-rises to theme code 2012 the cynical corporate appropriation of the essay travel, already appropriated ‘Maj’ shopping centre to make the indicatively named ‘My’ Narodni[20]. The controversy around the formal listing of this building also shows the often particularly bitter hatred of thesis discount 2012 brutalist style buildings that is not the preserve of either Central Europe or postcommunist countries and which relates to the discourses that also inform architectural meaning-making. It has long been accepted that it is mainly architects and annotated bibliography research paper, architecture critics who champion brutalist buildings, imposing them on the poor folk who actually have to live there, while they retreat to more comfortable and comforting climes. It has been of thesis theme discount 2012 continued delight to conservative commentators that the iconoclastic critic Charles Jencks declared that “Modern Architecture died in St Louis, Missouri on July 15, 1972 at 3.32pm or thereabouts when the infamous Pruitt-Igoe scheme, or rather several of its slab blocks, were given the final coup de grace by essay on safe travel and tourism, dynamite.[21]” Those conservative critics may not have liked all of, or indeed any, of the postmodernism that Jencks espoused, but this was a victory for anti-modern traditionalism in architecture and a foreseeable end to all this concrete, glass and steel.

Jencks was purposefully premature and thesis 2012, the battle for modernism has raged on ever since, but it has done so in a prevailing critical climate that has sought to blame many urban and social ills on this style of architecture, which bred nought but misery, poverty crime and alienation. However, around the world, this received wisdom has come into question, with the re-appraisal of the aesthetics of brutalist buildings often accompanied by refurbishment. Even the founding myth of the critics of modern architecture – that the brutalist-modern Pruitt-Igoe housing project was fundamentally unsound – has been challenged. The recent documentary film ‘The Pruitt-Igoe Myth’ highlights the joy with which the first tenants embraced their new homes and foregrounds the lack of maintenance, willful ghettoisation by the city authorities and the poor socio-economic status of the occupants as the main causes of the degeneration of life on the estate, rather than seeing the architecture itself as the cause. Similarly, according to reports in the Czech media, anthropological research on bibliography Prague’s biggest housing estate at Jizni Mesto, revealed “strong social networks, plenty of greenery and decent public transportation[22]” and that this and other such areas had not become a low-income ghettoes in the course of thesis theme transition. Among the signature buildings of Jizni Mesto are the linked towers of the Hotel Kupa, which recall London’s Trellick tower from the renowned British brutalist architect Erno Goldfinger. The revival in the fortunes of thesis definicion brutalist buildings in other parts of the world has coincided with the re-appraisal of Czech communist architectures, as it has seemingly been realized that they were not some aberrant form unique to authoritarian regimes, but that actually the embrace of theme discount 2012 this style by the skilled hands of Karel Prager and annotated bibliography for history, others was actually capable of producing beautiful, interesting buildings. While questions will always be raised about the politics of those who were able to build during this time, even non-party members like Prager, this picture is complicated by thesis theme discount code, the continued activity of interwar architects such as Josef Havlicek and Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer in postwar Czechoslovakia. However, it should be recognized that the for history research, best brutalist buildings bear elegant witness to thesis the resilience of cultural creativity that was able to flourish despite the adverse conditions of the time.

Recognising the aesthetic value of these marquee buildings makes it harder to simply dismiss their everyday cousins in the housing estates, which is increasingly important in the increasing socio-economic Darwinism of a neoliberalising Europe where we should continue to assert that just because you don’t live in essays, a villa doesn’t mean that you don’t belong here. The rehabilitation of thesis theme code 2012 these material forms and their social meaning comes as part of security essays a renewed willingness to properly reckon with the past in all its complexity, refusing the thesis theme discount 2012, simplifying narratives of totalizing tyranny and victimhood in for history paper, order to reclaim the uniquely Czech experiences of this time and to theme 2012 be thus better able to contextualise and understand them within wider narratives, which can then also be better challenged. Essays? This in turn may speak of a desire to re-assert political subjectivity and articulate a new way of being internationally Czech without either passively acquiescing to every outside demand or resorting to thesis theme code aggressively parochial populist nationalism. Having taken on board much of the postmodern critique, is this revival indicative of essay on safe travel and tourism a new modernism, unimpressed with the low ambitions, broken promises and discount 2012, banal pastiche of the geographies at history’s end? In the context of on safe and tourism ongoing and theme discount, uneven economic hardship across Europe as well as resurgent public political activism we should be rightly wary of architecture instrumentalised to political purpose, but at how to in kate the same time we cannot ignore the highly political causes and consequences of our material worlds and nor should we reject the possibilities that architecture holds with regard to being, belonging and becoming. Too often, Prague is damned with faint praise: deliriously light entertainment for tourists passing between Europe’s sites of heavy, serious, real memory; a refuge from reality for thesis 2012 introverted dreamers, trying to stay forever young, like the First Republic they idolize; in annotated paper, short, somewhere to visit, a nice place to play, a temporary refuge from the real business going on thesis code elsewhere. The beautifully restored surfaces of the first republic demand respect and it is understandable why that remarkable age remains so well-remembered. However, without the emergent reckoning with that which followed, a nostalgic melancholia would dominate the politics of Czech memory and obscure the opportunities and demands of the present, not only annotated bibliography for history paper, betraying the spirit of that past, but surrendering the present to the narratives of victimhood and thesis theme discount 2012, pedagogy. Food Essays? The restoration of key buildings and the continued process of improving the housing estates as well as the increased number of exhibitions on Czech Brutalism and the discussion of the issues surrounding it in the media all point to a new engagement with unquiet ghosts that haunt the thesis theme discount 2012, present.

Perhaps the write turabian, belated blooming of thesis theme discount code 2012 Czech brutalism and the recent (and bizarre) decision to re-build the Berliner StadtSchloss (in place of the Palast der Republik) mark a passing of the mnemonic baton, to Bohemia, where Prague is shedding its berlin complex[23] and essay my childhood, is demanding to be seen afresh, as a city in full. This is an urban landscape that runs the gamut of glamour and grit, a schwer site of work and memory, not only licht laughter and forgetting. It should recognize itself as such and demand the same recognition from others. Thesis Theme Code 2012? Such recognition that would begin to challenge the themen, hierarchies of inclusion that preclude real belonging and limit the ability of people to participate in determine their individual and thesis theme code 2012, collective futures.
